Karnivool – Sound Awake

Somewhere between indie rock, 90’s alternative/grunge, a hint of spacey stoner metal and even a tiny bit of Tool lies the simple world of “Sound Awake”, an album of swirling muddy basslines, airy vocals, simple guitar chords, near twanging arpeggios and roaming melodies. It does however get closer to an indie, almost radio version of metalgaze, such as Neurosis or Isis.
It’s a tough album to take in if you’re expecting anything technical, and may be a bit much for certain underground fans to accept at first, as all the songs feel like short catchy ditties when in fact they’re quite long, usually starting at 4 minutes, and one song going up to 12 minutes. The songs don’t feel short though (most of the time anyways), and don’t seem to follow the verse/chorus format to closely, yet allowing the vocals to help guide most of the album.
There’s tiny downsides – it’s an album that can be tough to take in all at once with so many long songs, and the production does seem a little glossy at times for a band that should be a bit more raw, but these are just tiny little niggles that barely impact the album.
