Ramming Speed – Brainwreck

When I deal with crossover thrash, I’m half excited, and half expecting some kids to be hopping onto a certain something. now of course the people who really understand crossover thrash understand the punk roots, and for the most part “Brainwreck” is a look to the past, merging simple punk chords with some sharp pedal tone riffs, a grainy yelp and even a few old-school 80’s heavy metal guitar harmonies.
The execution doesn’t quite take you back in time though. The vocalist comes off as a bit tired, and while the guitars nail the old tone just right to become crunchy without being overpowering, the off-the-rails and organic feeling of the old bands is replaced by something a bit more glossy. Old school genre merging is of course a cool idea (though for the most part it’s crossover thrash), but the spirit of the day isn’t quite captured, making “Brainwreck” an interpretation of the past, rather then a simple party-metal album.
