Whiplash – Unborn Again

What should retro metal feel like? Perhaps it should feel like a history lesson, as some bands met a waypoint between an evolution of one type of metal (or rock) to another form of metal. Imagine if you will an early 80’s band landing somewhere between heavy metal, rock and thrash. From simple crunchy rock riffs, to hold-em-down chords, to some sharp guitar attacks with pedal tones, “Unborn Again” meets 3 evolutionary steps in one place. The vocals feature a high-pitched singing voice that at times reminds one of Bon Scott of of AC/DC, although this sing sings more often rather than taking any time to talk some of the lyrics out.
Everything is pretty rough around the edges. Nothing is really that powerful, as the drums are a bit soft, so if the highly noticeable bass, the guitars don’t quite buzz like chainsaws, the singer can’t always stay on key, and the whole package is a bit loose. All those elements together in a retro package are a bit of a double-edged sword, as “Unborn Again” is raw and organic. The sloppy style does go with early day good-time heavy metal, and helps to provide an old-school feel. The rough edges can also cause the album to grate slightly at times. In the end, “Unborn Again” is a history lesson on several levels, as the band was putting albums out back in the day, and managed to revive much of the youthful charm and feel, as it comes off like a bunch of kids looking back in time rather than adults.
