Insomnium – Across the Dark

Every now and then I get a band who I know when I describe there’s going to be some arguments. I’m sure there’s going to be people debating to each other whether “Across the Dark” by Insomnium is a folk metal album, doom metal, or melodic death metal album, so here’s how I “interpret” it.

The core base of everything revolves round the dueling doom guitars, with one providing the melancholic, and sometimes folk like melodies supported by simple, low-end repeating riffs to hold those melodies up. For something that’s on the doom-like side though, it you get a constant feeling, like a continuous flow of energy, despised the fact that the album stays to a mid to quick pace. The really fast songs tend to combine both guitars into melodic death metal songs much like In Flames, with melodic thrash lines hopping between the high end and the pedal tone, though they tend to be the least entertaining songs. Every now and then there’s acoustics to bring in a bit more folk feeling to the album, while just about everything is topped off with a distinctly European, yet powerful low growl, which adds a different variant to the typical melodic meets death metal approach.

The majority of the album is where the action is at though. While most bands playing a style of metal related to folk almost always lightening up, I can’t help feel like Insomnium have actually gotten heavier since their last release, likely with better production and by keeping the action busy, with different instruments performing differently at the same time while playing off each other. It’s those huge melodies in the songs though that provide gigantic, memorable hooks.
