Venue: Mavericks Bar – Ottawa, Ontario
Bands: Lacuna Coil, Hail the Villain
Ottawa tends to be a city where major metal bands skip through on North American tours. For this special night, one of the most popular bands in the goth/melodic metal scene dropped by at Mavericks bar in Ottawa’s downtown area to show us that they haven’t forgotten about the nation’s capital. Doors opened at 7:00 p.m. for a line-up including a local band opening for the following two staples, Hail the Villain and Lacuna Coil. I was only able to get there around the time the second band was finishing their set, which seemed like they hadn’t attracted many people to the venue in the end, but the folks who did manage to see Hail the Villain heard a bunch of Toronto kids playing some music somewhere in between rock and hard rock.
The crowd started to pile up around 9:00 p.m., anxiously awaiting the arrival of this concert’s feature band. Lacuna Coil started playing half an hour later, opening with the first track of their new album “Shallow Life“, a tantric introduction to what they were going to please the fans with next. The band’s bassist was unable to attend the night’s performance, which led to the female vocalist jokingly asking members of the crowd if anyone could jump in and play bass for them. Both the vocalists performed very well and emanated an amazing stage presence that will not be forgotten by fans who were there to experience it.
The crowd was so deeply mesmerized that it looked like everyone was in one huge trance, not even paying attention to the couple of rowdy guys trying to start up a mosh pit every second song. Throughout the show they played many of their signature songs and even stunned everyone with a cover of Depeche Mode’s classic, “Enjoy the Silence“. A nice finish to an amazing set was the song “Our Truth” from their “Karmacode” album, surprisingly satisfying the crowd who didn’t even ask for an encore. The band members stayed well after the last song to thank their fans with handshakes, guitar picks, drumsticks and a few parting words saying that this city was their favorite stop on the current tour. Hopefully, Lacuna Coil will play here more often after seeing how Ottawa metal fans greet these bands very warmly.
