The Red Chord – Fed Through the Teeth Machine

I can feel a strange progression coming on through The Red Chords albums. Previously they’d been mostly a band that merges old-school grind with noise and a hint of death metal. Sure they’d switch gears rather than melt their chosen styles together, but in the start-and-stop world of grinds blasting to grudging nature, that’s not always a bad thing.

Much like their old albums, “Fed Through the Teeth Machine” continues much of their previous formula, though this time around there’s a significant portion of progressive death metal that even leads to some melodic passages. The stop-and-go nature of grind allows them to get away with such a combination when they stack a progressive melody right beside dissonance, or technical moments right beside simple chords. Riding on top are a few guest vocal spots, though Guy Kozowyks voice doesn’t seem quite as rough as before, and tends to stick mostly to a comfortable mid-range bark.

In the end, “Fed Through the Teeth Machine” isn’t too much of a departure from their groundbreaking, and sometimes epic earlier albums, and doesn’t seem to contain as many of the hooks. It’s still extremely dangerous, and there’s a hint of rawness that gives you the feeling that everything could fall apart at any moment, which of course is always exciting.
