Pelican – What we All Come to Need

The world of Pelican is one that’s also inhabited by such metalgaze bands like Isis and Neurosis, though Pelican is instrumental and almost exclusively uses only bass guitar and drums. Describing that style of underground music is always difficult, but it’s built on simplicity, from easy chords to melodies that get right to the melodic point without even trying.
Pelican have been masters of crafting long songs with atmosphere that’s builds itself and comes down slowly, and you could always feel that the songs came out of good, long fun jams. Even with the soothing male guest vocals that breath their way into the final track, this album has a slight downside, which is the feeling of comfort, as though the band are experienced and are doing, and what they know and comes all to easy and quickly. If you’re the type to sit down and really listen to an album, and to put your attention forth, you’ll know it’s a listening effort that’s not quite the easiest, but it does come with some rewards, and “What we all Come to Need” doesn’t quite have as many rewards as previous Pelican albums, though it certainly has more than enough to fill the needs of many.
