Russian Circles – Geneva

So many artists are looking to create a “darker” new album, but is it really darker than the last? Russian Circles are able to express the instrumental desires without actually having to tell people that the first half of “Geneva” really is darker than their earlier efforts. The first 3 songs are heavy beaters, and certainly set the stage for the band to fit into the instrumental world of Pelican, or even alongside the vocal Isis. After the harshness is done building up, the 3rd song “Melee” closes on a slow note, and then comes the lightest song on the album. After that, the album is generally lighter and more upbeat, and closes on the depressing mood of “Philos”.

Some of the coolest ideas and riffs are simple ideas and little licks that people constantly keep jamming on but can’t quite put into a song. When people can focus those into coherent songs, you might just get the soundtrack to your life.
