Paradise Lost – Faith Divides us, Death Unites us

Every now and then bands who some have touted as “selling out” (I’m not judging, and I’ve barely heard the new generation Paradise Lost stuff anyway) every now and then put out a “back to the roots” album.

Being the phenomenal doom/death metal act as they were back in the early 90’s, Paradise Lost influenced many bands and set the standards at slow tempos with melancholic melodies and the interplay of traditional rhythm and lead guitars – in this case rhythm holding down the riffs while the lead guitar plays the said sad melodies on top. Those wanting the band to return to their original roots can easily rejoice, as the early action is back in spades, with nothing but guitar, bass drums and vocals. Vocally speaking, Nick Holmes does rough his voice up a little bit every now and then, but nothing to the doom/death metal style of his early years, preferring to sing everything, though there are some moments where he adds some grittiness to his voice.

The results come out pretty well; the band manages to recapture their signature style in a way that you’d think they would’ve forgotten, as they have a unique way that’s subtle, but extremely difficult to duplicate. Certainly some of the passion has been regained, but perhaps they’re not as unhappy as they were when the old songs were written, which would make sense now that they’ve grown up, and there’s a few bits and pieces and the rare song that comes off as being in a creative drought. “Faith Divides us, Death Unites us” also isn’t a whole cohesive album as much as it is a collection of songs as well, and that fact is felt in the way they introduce the album and abruptly end it.
