King Diamond – The Spider’s Lullaby (Reissue)

Right from the get go, the opening song jumps right into the action with thrashy, early 80’s heavy metal, going right for the throat with a huge hook for a chorus. This album seems to feature extra keyboards and guitar melodies that would remind people of Children of Bodom. Did Alexi Laiho mention King Diamond as an influence? I don’t recall ever hearing that name mentioned. It’s not something that permeates the whole album, but rather specific moments littered throughout.

Fewer long song really work to the bands strong suit, as they’re well constructed and often have the feeling of a mini-epic, as well as being filled energy. The rest of the album doesn’t quite hold up as well as the early half, and the ending is abrupt rather than something which you’d expect to flow to the end, which does diminish the epic feeling somewhat, but for the most part the individual songs hold the album together.
