King Diamond – The Graveyard (Reissue)

For those of you who’re familiar with the vocals of the vocalist who the band is named after, King Diamond (who also sings for Mercyful Fate), his voice can be polarizing. The music itself comes right from early 80’s heavy metal, with touch a touch of rock, though there’s some keyboards and keyboard songs that attempt to imitate orchestras and a bit of old horror movie soundtracks which come up more towards the end of the record as it slows down and attempts to become more epic. Of course the album was released in 1996, back when metal wasn’t a big thing, so perhaps this reissue can give it new life.
As the band is named after the man himself, King Diamonds vocals are the main attraction, and his falsetto voice can be a bit rough to some, as I’m not quite sure the King was trained on how to sing. There’s plenty of spoken word action where King Diamond goes over-the-top in his story telling attempts, with lots of subject matter dealing about insanity and scaring children coming next. It can be really cheesy at time, though that does become part of the charm.
