Immortal – All Shall Fall

I find that comeback albums tend to be an all-or-nothing deal. Some bands try and lose the fire, but for some the exact reason they’ve come back is the passion. The phoenix has truly risen from its own ashes to become reborn.

Immortals brand of black metal has never quite been like anyone elses. The production became better as time went on, and while they never added keyboards, their own signature grew every time. There’s blasting and tremolo picked riffs to be sure, but the album doesn’t drown in them, or continually lean on blast beats to get the job done. Instead the simple ideas within the riffs have become passionate, catchy riffs, hooking you in with their power, or having you hum along to the tiny little bit of melody hidden within them.

Every song is epic, powerful and well structured, and while it might not have huge solos (guitar solos rarely grace the album) and guitar work tends to stick to riffs evolved from black metal, “All Shall Fall” is practically like an early Metallica album of black metal.
