The Gates of Slumber – Hymns of Blood and Thunder

The world of old-school styled doom is a strange one. As retro as many of the bands sound, some of them never quite sound like they belong in the 70’s.

What you get on “Hymns of Blood and Thunder” does come off as some of the slower albums to have an effect on thrash in some ways. They’ve got some moments where they chug along, and sometimes the rhythm on the guitars gets pretty razor sharp, though for the most part they take their time and mellow out, yet in an undeniably metal style. Even with some of the acoustic guitars, the rare Pink Floyd touches, and those vocals that fit perfectly because of the vocalists light singing, yet he hasn’t gone with a style that most schooled singers would’ve gone with in the day, giving a more hometown hero feel.

There’s a few hooks that pop up here and there, but it’s the general atmosphere of the the album that pull it along. Sometimes the band mellows out a bit too much, and the songs and the album doesn’t dive or climb enough, meaning it just barely earns it’s rank here.
