Austrian Death Machine – Double Brutal

Some albums you simply have no hope for. The first Austrian Death Machine album I’d heard, “Total Brutal” was a standard sounding album that merged crossover thrash with melodic metalcore style As I lay Dying with a poor Arnold Schwarzenegger impersonation with jokes that got poor quickly. The EP had only 2 new cover songs, so that was a huge disappointment. But now look at how the tables have turned…

It seems that Austrian Death Machine musically has become a larger reflection of modern thrash, crossover thrash, metalcore (they have a few breakdowns, though they’re not littered across the whole album) and even a little bit of death metal. Those guitar solos shred the fretboard to splinters! The harsh vocals of Tim Lambesis do a good job of covering ground in the realm of metal, with a few death growls too.

The previous Arnold Schwarzenegger jokes were poorly impersonated and stale, but the new person to impersonate Arnold Schwarzenegger does a much better job, and the movie jokes are referenced much better with the heavy music. Though Tim Lambesis does sound a little bored when he talks during those jokes…

The 2nd half of the album ends on cover songs ranging from Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth, the Misfits, Motorhead, Agnostic Front, and even a Goretorture song (that’s right, goregrind!) All the songs represent what you’re getting on the original songs of “Double Brutal”. A pleasant surprise indeed.
