Evergreen Terrace – Almost Home

Does anyone remember when metalcore actually meant something? No? Hung up on metal elitism? Before bands started catching on to the formula of basically making every song a race to play one note, there seemed to be more meaning behind it. Alright, so Evergreen Terrace doesn’t have a message as much as they are simply entertaining, but they’ve been doing it longer than a lot of other bands, they’re more creative at it, they’re more passionate about it, and they have actual roots to the past.
Their own style seems to have evolved into one that’s not formulatic, it’s generally metallic, yet you can’t quite place what kind of metal. Most of the music is built around simple chords running up and down the neck being busier than most simple chord driven music, and includes old-school dissonant skronks, some shimmering guitar melodies on top, and yes, they do have single-note breakdowns. But wait! They put more effort in at hiding their breakdowns with other busy action in the guitars, they’re catchy, full of passion, and have an old-school metalcore feel, like from the early millennium.
What really sets “Almost Home” apart from the other metalcore acts is the infusion of punk. With all the clean vocals floating around between the Chimaira like screaming is a melodic punk voice backed up with simple chords in places to back it up. This certainly helps to connect the dots between metal, hardcore and punk. Does anyone remember the connection between all those types of underground music? No? At least the bands get it. In the end, this is fun and passionate, something that modern metalcore often lacks.
