Sights & Sounds – Monolith

Sights & Sounds is the newest creation fronted by Andrew Neufeld, which many readers might know from Canadian hardcore act Comeback Kid. This new band is completely separate from his other work and focuses largely on creating insane ideas and putting them to work in some rocking, post- influenced songs.

The entire “Monolith” is an immense palette of loud, heavy, and rooted post-hardcore that emits expression one can only envision with closed eyes. When the guys aren’t playing at full force, the serene atmosphere generated from the instruments can almost seem like slow motion, and you might actually wish that the seven-minute song would last a little bit longer. With all the soaring melodies, catchy hooks, and subtle samples, the album is quite simply a huge, cohesive journey. It might take a couple listens through to catch everything that’s going on, but once you hear things like the shimmering guitars overtop sturdy drums in “Pedal Against The Wind”, or the soothing “whoa”s that close “Shudder, St. Kilda”, there’s no choice but to appreciate.

Neufeld’s slightly grainy voice almost acts as a counter to the sheer tension caused by the guitars that ache to be played faster. Overall, “Monolith” is solid from beginning to end and has the ability to be an underground classic in which people will look back upon in future years.
