Blood Tsunami – Grand Feast for Vultures

I always love getting surprises from nowhere, which was what Blood Tsunami’s previous album was like. I had heard about “Thrash Metal”, but hasn’t had a chance to put much effort forth to listen to the album until it came time to do a review, and then it finally hit home. Blood Tsunami had created a modernized thrash album that moved forward while at the same time taking in the influence of their thrash peers (mostly Metallica and Slayer), as well as the bands that influenced their peers. It was pretty clear after that album that Blood Tsunami had something bigger within their sights than making just another thrash album.
I was completely looking forward to “Grand Feast for Vultures” wondering what they’d be able to do this time around. I honestly didn’t think it was possible for Blood Tsunami to improve upon themselves, but the songs are truly faster, and longer, with most songs being over 5 minutes. Upping the speed and making the songs longer might only be superficial elements, what sends this album home is the fact that every riff, every melody, every guitar solo, every scream and every backed up growl is worth it, and hooks you in further than you’ve felt any other new thrash band. While the songs are mostly long (quite a few at 5 minutes, 8 minutes, 10, and even a 12 minute instrumental), they all feel short, because of the ability to suck you in like a tornado.
There was once a band who reached the pinnacle of writing epic anthems who had a high degree of popularity, who traded in their throne of credibility. They’ve regained some steam as of late, but it’s pretty clear to me what Blood Tsunami is gunning for, and of all the metal bands out there, this is the one who truly deserves that big break to change the world.
