Janus - Red Right Return

It’s funny how certain music sounds when you put yourself in an unbiased position. I’m sure most people would hear some post-hardcore from the first song and right off the bat just toss this album in the trash and say “There’s too much of this stuff. Review done.” Sure it’s post-hardcore that hangs more towards the radio side, but it’s the kind of album that just hangs under the radio radar, and throws enough of a variation forth with some passion to make some people think. Well, at least the people that have no fear of the minor industrial elements. There’s enough passion behind the hooky choruses to get you singing along, with some electronic beats to bang your head a little bit, and some guitars that move just far enough away from your standard indie-pop/teen movie background music.
The vocals sometimes do get close to that post-hardcore whine, but are held back and rely more on singing skill, rather than falling back on an old standard. There are attempts at screaming, however the harshness isn’t quite up there, and there’s some weakness to it, fortunately screaming is rarely attempted. I also found a couple of single-note breakdowns…
While “A Tale of two Faces” might be the light version of post-hardcore, you can still feel the enjoyment behind the playing, letting you know that the band picked up their instruments for all the right reasons. It also beats the pants off so much generic, blurry indie-pop.
