Escape The Fate – This War Is Ours

This is the second record for Escape The Fate, and the first for their new vocalist Craig Mabbitt. Their sound has changed a little, but listening to their modern post- album “This War Is Ours” you can hear that the band has gotten new life.
“This Was Is Ours” has a wide range of genres mixed through the entire album. There are your typical post-hardcore tracks with that catchy, radio-friendly sound by the likes of Fall Out Boy and Panic! at the Disco, as well there’s some ‘80’s glam rock guitar riffing and a post- bands attempt at trying to be “heavy”; I do have to say though, that the breakdown in the title-track is pretty convincing. While listening to the last track, the curious “It’s Just Me”, I was trying to figure out what it reminded me of, then when the track ended and carnival music was playing in the background, I knew.
As for the vocals, Craig really helps with the ‘80’s feel that flows off a good portion of the record, although the singing can be high pitched at times, which is extremely common in the post-hardcore scene. At times the vocals appear to be soaring with layers of singing helped by the rest of the band. Plus there are a whole bunch of ‘80’s glam rock guitar solos, which completely fits into the songwriting.
I do hear passion in the background of this post-‘80’s-hardcore, but I also hear a band that is trying to sound bigger then they really are. It’s evident that their sound is aching for an arena to be played in, as well when you listen to the record you can only wonder what it would be like to see them live, but my fear has to be that the live show wouldn’t be able to keep up to the hype that’s pushed forward by the studio version.
