Chesterfield - Death Grip

Only knowing Chesterfield from various past punk compilations, I was very excited when I received their newest album “Death Grip” in the mail. When I began to listen I was somewhat surprised as I remembered this trio playing a more underground hardcore/pop punk, but as I listened further into the record, the old school sound I was anticipating emerged, but not as I remembered.

The entire 10 tracks have the raw, jagged attitude of the underground ‘90’s punk scene, almost similar to a grunge sound… almost. The guitars have a slight scratch to them and could’ve been recorded inside a small tin building in the middle of a field, and it actually sounds pretty good!

That’s enough for instrumental descriptions, the actual music is a mixture of the fast-paced hardcore/pop punk that was so popular with the late ‘90’s underground scene; Chesterfield fits comfortably along side 88 Fingers Louie and Kid Dynamite. Other tracks have a false metal sense with a chugging guitar rhythm that sounds like it could get heavier at any time, but doesn’t– the slight grain in the voice just wouldn’t fit heaviness.

Although it’s not what I was expecting, and it was a long time ago, it’s just good to hear a band that’s still pushing a raw, DIY sound when a handful didn’t last the scene.
