Underoath - Lost In the Sound of Separation

Well, I guess this album shows me for listening to other peoples opinions. It seemed like all the people around me treated Underoath poorly, saying such things as “They sound like SO MANY other bands! There’s JUST SO MANY of them!”, and of course I also got to see the fans that that enjoy stuff like Underoath (or are supposed to be similar to Underoath) doing what they do to give that particular style, or the popularity of it a bad name.
When I first started listening to “Lost In the Sound of Separation”, the first thought that popped into my head was that this album is exactly not what I expected. The intro song was downright noisy (in a good way), and followed up by - what? More noise? Where the hell are all the sing-along choruses? Where is the singing whining that’s as annoying as possible? Sorry to disappoint you haters out there, but this truly is post-hardcore that goes back to the roots of hardcore. There’s also way more screaming than there is singing, with nary a song-along chorus, and when there is singing, it ain’t whiny. In fact, I could swear these songs were getting long enough to get into Cult Of Luna territory, especially with those slower songs that build an atmosphere with shimmering guitars, only to become heavy.
What’s the complete opposite of selling out? Wouldn’t that be commercial suicide? This probably should be considering how nuts this gets compared to radio post-hardcore, yet somehow I think Underoaths fans will probably catch on to this album anyways. Sorry to all those scene haters out there, but don’t worry though, I’m sure I’ll get generic pop-metal album to beat the crap out of soon.
