Into Eternity - The Incurable Tragedy

I think that playing progressive and power metal are pretty daunting tasks. Bands playing those styles of music basically have to live up to certain expectations, or fade into obscurity, such as top-notch production, huge displays of technical proficiency, and inhuman precision. There is no room for error in the realm of power and/progressive, because if you don’t accomplish those tasks, not only do audiences and many record labels ignore you, but the end result simply doesn’t turn out well. It’s a catch-22, as it’s difficult to display raw emotion with songs that have been practised so much that they’re second nature.
So what am I trying to say here? I’m having difficulty feeling the depressive emotions come off of “The Incurable Tragedy” due to the picture-perfect execution. Sure, this is progressive/power metal with some death metal vocals thrown in for good measure, and plenty of skill is being shown, but when the singing is so spot on that there’s absolutely no crack in the singer’s voice, and playing so on time you can set your watch to it, the message ends up getting lost. That’s actually too bad, as I remember the previous Into Eternity albums being just raw enough that you could feel the bands passion as they toyed with song ideas. All this might seem great to Into Eternity fans who want their band to do exactly what they’ve done before, only sharper than ever and based on a foundation of human tragedy focussed into a positive outlet such as song writing, unfortunately I fear that many other are seeing Into Eternity blur against their own back catalogue, and the many other progressive related metal bands coming out of the woodwork.
