Ehnahre - The man Closing Up

I was actually pretty amazed at how far Khanate had actually gone in terms of popularity. For a band that pretty much made some of the slowest, most intolerable music possible, they were extremely good at it, and surprise! They actually ended up writing good songs, and they seemed to be catching on every time they’d put an album out.
Ehnahre seems to take a lot of influence from that world inhabited by Khante and their close friends, with one band in particular coming to mind being Khlyst. The end result features some intolerably slow doom that gets close to the same speed as Khanate, which also includes the same sense of white noise and piercing guitar sounds that stab like a rusty knife, sandwiched in between much speedier portion, coming close to a more caustic dissonant version of death metal./ Well, they’re take on death metal, which is a unique one. It’s a very strange combination that has a hard time working itself out, as one moment could practically be ambient, then the band pulls out and starts blasting with no buildup. The band probably hit their intended purpose, to hit the listener much harder than regular death metal, which unfortunately will likely get lost on many listeners. Unfortunately, the effect does come off on the hodge-podge and cobbled up side.
The worst part however are the out of time and out of tune improvisation parts, just like Khlyst. I would imagine the actual concept of having improvisation coming together to make working songs as being one of the most difficult tasks a band could undergo, and one that rarely works out. It doesn’t pan out here either, . While the intention is there, essentially to free-roam and make an ambient sound, the end result like what you’d expect when kids mess around with making noise in the garage.
The audio concept that Ehnahre are attempting to express is actually a sound one, although the execution needs to be streamlined to get the bugs worked out. The individual portions in every (very long) song are actually original and extremely compelling, it’s just too bad that the way they’re arranged causes them to clash, with the exception of the improvisation sections which are simply terrible. With an artistic pedigree coming from former members of Kayo Dot, I suspect that the time for Ehnahre to hit their stride is close by.
