Drudgery – Rust (EP)

Ah yes, good ol’ grind. Old-school grind is of course played with passion and the kind reckless abandon that goes along with basement recordings, and just having plain fun. Unless you’re really angry because you don’t fit it, then it becomes more of a cathartic release.

Certain styles of underground music that are allowed to get away with being played by the books usually require more than a good execution, meaning that the creator of such art must supply tons of passion. Unless one has an underlying hatred for life going full-force, then passion can be found in other places, typically creative exploration.

While “Rust” is a decently fun grind excursion, it’s the madness underneath that isn’t quite getting expressed with the simple chord runnings, mic-breaking screaming, tempo jumps and blast beats, making the end result a bit on the typical side. Just look at the song titles, such as the one-word anger expressing “Stagnation” and “Bottomfeeder”, or the old sayings of “Sink or Swim” and “At all Cost”.

An EP is always a good testing water for a band. If the next Drudgery release comes with some left audio turns, or after the band members have taken great effort to make their lives worse, then that’ll be a moment to write out of prison for. For now, this is still pretty decent as far as old-school grind goes.
