Scars On Broadway - Scars On Broadway

Back during the metal depression of the 90’s when popular heavy music was mostly nu-metal, there were a scant few bands who reigned supreme with a thing called artistic integrity. Of course, when said bands moved forward to create a unique beast, they ended up leaving nu-metal behind. One of those bands was System Of A Down.

When I heard about Scars On Broadway forming with Daron Malakian (guitar, vocals) and John Dolmayan (drummer), former members of System Of A Down, I really didn’t know what to expect, but I figured it’d be crazy. In this case we have some humorous indie-rock thrown together with the energy and passion of children, but the organization of adults. On the surface, everything is a fun hodge-podge of indie-rockin’ chords, old-school 70’s keyboards and a little bit of System Of A Down to heavy and speed up the action. Vocally and lyrically you get rather young sounding sung voices with harmonizations that sound as though they came together quite seamlessly, and word combinations pulled together in an almost random fashion that seem childish and fun on the surface. A closer look provides some more serious questions about the world around ourselves. For instance, in the song “b” the chorus runs “If we ‘re gonna kill each other/how are we gonna to live forever? If we’re gonna live forever, how we gonna kill each other?” At first, it just looks like a cool statement of flipping words around, but the message is still how the world views conquering as going down in history. Of course, then you get something like the song “Chemicals” which is just a fun silly jaunt.

What’s not surprising is that Scars On Broadway are a strange beast. Would you expect System Of A Down members not to do whatever the heck they wanted? What is surprising is how well this went over. Hopefully this album will open a few minds to trying new things.
