The T4 Project – Story Based Concept Album

After two and a half years in the making, The T4 Project has revealed itself as a punk rock super-group. With artists spanning the past couple of decades (The Damned, Pennywise, Strung Out, Subhumans, Circle Jerks, Bad Religion, Buzzcocks… to name a few), this concept album combines the veteran musicianship with creator Shannon Saint Ryan’s eagerness to put conscious thoughts into the minds of listeners.
“Story Based Concept Album” consists of 10 songs and 8 pseudo commercials. The commercials are derisive and sarcastic and have been created to make you think, and while some sound like they have a very biased opinion, others have a tendency to go either way. As for the actual songs, it’s punk rock the way it used to be – songs that range from 2 - 3 minutes comprised of thick, fast riffs, quick drums and gang vocals – but with cleaner production. Actually very clean production; for the magnitude of artists encompassed in this 30 minute album, “Story Based Concept Album” sounds like each instrument was performed by the same individual. Which isn’t the case, by the way; The T4 Project has two vocalists, three guitarists, two bassists, two drummers, one keyboardist and 40 backup singers– thanks to the Ventura College Choir.
While the story concept was fashioned by Saint Ryan, the lyrics were written by Strung Out’s frontman, Jason Cruz. (Which is why the album has a strong Strung Out trait with his distinct voice.) For the storyline, well you can read along with the colorful 24-page booklet about the T4 virus and how it slowly ruined Phil and Jackie’s life (the two characters) through politics, prejudice and revenge. Although this record might have a larger appeal for those of us who grew up in the ‘90’s, everyone else who enjoys a good, solid punk album will get lost in the meaningful half-hour mini-epic.
