Norma Jean - The Anti Mother

Sometimes something will be heard about a bands album that will scare you into thinking that something bad will happen - such Cryptopsy looking for a vocalist who can sing, as well as a keyboadist/sampler. In this case, Norma Jean was working with famed nu-metal producer Ross Robinson, Chino Moreno of The Deftones, Page Hamilton of Helment and Cove Reber of Saosin. I’m sure many are expecting some sort of nu-metal/early 90’s metal/radio emo sell-out. What did we get? Surprisingly good ol’ Norma Jean, the band who started the whole jagged metalcore thing with a couple of extra sharp stabbing thrown in.

There’s a lot of Norma Jean clone bands out there, yet this good ol’ originating band still is still at their stabbing, dissonant, cutting caustic best, containing little odd bits and pieces you wouldn’t expect, most being hard to describe (except for the gang of kids!), and honing their song writing skills over time. There’s a little bit of singing action here and there, but to be honest it melds in so well that it comes off completely natural. The album also melts into itself quite easily, with the differences and nuances giving the listener something to look forward to in their epic journey across the album.

As much as I love the harsh, jagged forms of metalcore, it’s often difficult to beat the masters at their own game, meaning that “The Anti Mother” leaves the other clone bands behind. After all, why go out for hamburger when I can have this steak at home?
