Suburban Legends – Let’s Be Friends

I was wrong. When I heard the name for the new Suburban Legends record was titled “Let’s Be Friends” I was under the assumption the band was either trying to reach out to some new listeners or strengthen the friendship of already devoted fans. In actuality the title is their lead-off title-track in which the lyrics pronounce that dreaded line that everyone in a relationship (or hopes for one) fears from their other (or crush), “let’s just be friends”. Regardless it’s still a welcoming fit for a title.

For a ska band turned funk, Suburban Legends have a unique sound that can appeal to a wide range of fans. As for their latest effort, there are traces of their early ska days, but the majority is a mixture of pop, funk and even disco. As well, with several years experience, their two-man horn section tends to pipe up in all the right places.

There is a small lyrical hurdle they have yet to jump– almost every song is focused on girls. There are some tracks, however, about other things; for instance the heated, pop-rock tune, “Fire“, where the lyrics are about their earlier van fire and robberies.

With that said, the diversity of (catchy) musical genres does make up for the lyrical redundancy… even if the entire song “Polyester” is sung in a high voice. It might actually be interesting to hear their evolution starting with their debut record. And by the way, the full album title is “Let’s Be Friends and Slay the Dragon Together“. Just thought you’d want to know.
