Lustmord - Other

As a reviewer, I often find myself caught between judging an album for the general musical underground versus a more specific set of fans. In this case “Other” is an ambient album, and while ambient does have some metal connections, the fan base tends to be pretty close-knit and specific in their tastes.

Like many ambient albums, this one tries to create a fearful location where people might be tortured, or a desolate destroyed landscape. Typically, they would make great soundtracks to horror movies. In this case, Lustmord prefers low keyboards rumbling around with noises, and other little scary bits of background noise. The rare variation throws a tiny little, itty bitty bit of distorted guitar into the mix. It’s all pretty scary stuff, all with songs that run into one another as though this is 1 song simply cut into tracks, which all would be cool, except for 2 factors. First is that there’s never and pickup - this sounds like a great soundtrack, only nothing ever happens. There’s no quick moment to set to something like a killer nabbing his victim, or those scary mutant creatures running over the ridge of that post-apocalyptic desert landscape. The 2nd problem is that the whole album sounds alike, with no variations, save for the guitars rarely thrown in.

I’m sure there might be some ambient fans who might tell me the purpose is not to build to a crescendo, a point which if brought up I’d have to disagree with. Even though I don’t know much about ambient, I am of course willing to give just about anything a chance, which in the case of the Lurker Of Chalice album I was quite impressed. That’s not to say the execution itself wasn’t great, I just feel that with some variation and something to build to, that would be wonderful ambient album, but until that day comes “Other” is very ho-hum.
