Less Than Jake – GNV FLA

This might be the record Less Than Jake fans have been waiting for for the past six years. After a two record stint on a major label the band has now decided to release their latest effort, “GNV FLA“, on their very own Sleep It Off Records. Appropriately titled after their hometown of Gainesville, Florida, LTJ has gone back to the sound that gained them the fame and following of the late ‘90’s- third wave ska.
The album starts off with the relaxed ska tune, “City of Gainesville“, then bursts into a quick, skate punk style in “State of Florida“. This is basically the format for the entire album; ska track followed by skate punk followed by ska. Some noteworthy tracks include the lead off single “Does the Lion City Still Roar?” and the catchy “The Space They Can’t Touch“. With the addition of Scott Klopfenstein (Reel Big Fish) on trumpet, their horn section sounds more refined; like the accompanying horns once again have new life. As for the lyrics, the band still sings about life in Gainesville and other random humours.
This is certainly LTJ’s cleanest effort, production wise that is. All the instruments, the horns and the vocals have been polished to an almost perfection. While they haven’t exactly tried any new ideas for this record, I’m certain fans are just relieved they`ve gone back to the basics.
