Sound and Fury – Sound and Fury

It’s invigorating when a band generates a new sound from an old sound. Many of today’s bands try to create a new sound, or use new instruments in a recording, or even try to create new sounds from existing instruments. Sound and Fury have come up with a very straightforward recipe: classic rock and classic punk. That’s it, no real surprises or shockers, just straight-up old-school rock ‘n roll.
Their self-titled debut album combines the classic rock sound of AC-DC with early punk rock resembling The Sex Pistols. While there are a small number of audacious guitar riffs, the majority of the record is played amongst power chords. The tracks are raw and in-your-face while the lyrics are about being young, reckless, and having a good time. Some high points for this album include the lead off anthem, “School’s Out”, a vigorous, up tempo track; “18”, their 1970’s punk influenced lead single about living life as a late teenager while authority looks down on you; and “Bad Touch”, a laid back rock ‘n roll tune (think “TNT” by AC-DC) perfect for taking a cruise downtown with that old car of yours.
With all of their strong tracks during the first half of the record, the latter half just doesn’t seem to keep up with the recurrant slow rock ‘n roll rhythms. But with that said, I’m sure this effort will be played loud and often at various parties.
