Revelations Of Rain - Marble Shades of Despair

Even all the way off in far away countries, there’s going to be some people who think differently with a yearning to play something different, who manage to find each other, get together, and make a band. Right now the general public isn’t having too much come our way in terms of metal from Russia, which could be for a variety of reason, with perhaps distribution being a setback.

Revelations Of Rain play doom/death in that classic manner we’ve all become familiar with. Or at least those who’ve been exposed to early 90’s doom/death, with this one being heavy on the keyboards and the drone doom buzz-saw guitars. The instrument production itself is a mixed bag, as the drums have a punchy drum-machine sound to them (though could’ve been played by an actual person). When the bass comes out, there’s an unfamiliar, almost twang that grates against the rest of the music, which I swear appeared in those old Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis games , and those keyboards sound cheap and cheesy as a Final Fantasy game on your Super Nintendo, although I do think the band tried to do the best they could with what they had at the time. On the positive side, those guitars crunch, bite and crush like being smothered down in a lake, and the vocalist has a wonderful low bark that really gets that cold despair out.

The action of course moves about as slow as an aging tortoise, with the “fast” moments including some double bass rolling. Despite the poor start, the depression does begin to engulf the listener, but not to a point where the songs feel like they’re pouring off passion or despair, or to the point where the album becomes compelling beyond a Russian doom oddity.

I think this is a case where Revelations Of Rain simply need more time to beef up their gear, tweak their song writing skills and aim for higher production next time. There’s something hiding beneath the surface of “Marble Shades of Despair” which never quite manages to express itself, so perhaps the following album will see the band realize their inspiration.
