Andras - Iron Way

There’s bee quite a few bands in the underground playing Viking/folk black metal, and doing a Viking/folk power metal deal, so how does the idea of sticking the 2 together sound? The end result is actually a lot better then you might think.
The overall effect of the album is one of evolution. You can tell that Andras has come from a raw black metal background, blast beats, tremolo picked riffs, cold guitars, raspy vocals and all, so a good chuck of that in a folk style is still left over. The rest however, is filled in with some lower growls, varied guitar playing, keyboard support, and some soaring singing, though not quite as much as the harsh vocals. Sound big, epic and soaring, especially with those orchestrated intros to play while you ride your horse along snow covered mountains to fight with an axe by your side? As it should!
The end product is a slight bit rough around the edges, with the production certainly sounding a lot better than raw, and the playing is still on the loose side at certain points, but when they nail those grand moments where everything is busy and flowing, it’s difficult to dislike. The differences between more black playing time and power metal moments don’t quite flow together in the easiest manner. I can feel that it’ll only be 1 more album before Andras hits their stride and finally manages to merge everything perfectly, but for right now this is still a very original, underground album worthy of attention.
