Carpenter - Law of the Land

I first saw Carpenter live just after they released their debut full length, “Law of the Land”, in London, Ontario, Canada. Knowing these guys played a progressive post-hardcore music style, I was expecting your average post-hardcore opening band. My expectation was quickly nullified as the sound that came from their instruments was a passionate classic rock infused, melodic post-hardcore.

“Law of the Land” is their third release and first full length. For vocalist/guitarist, Daniel Sioui, melody and the influence of classic rock (particularly John Cougar Mellencamp) have a very active role in his song writing. Tracks such as “Tell Me” and “A Different Life” have the strong influential sound of the old-school rock & roll while “In The Country” sounds like it could have been taken right out of the late 1970’s –early ‘80’s with the acoustic bridge and country like, head bobbing rhythm. While keeping in tune to the classics, their hardcore roots are equally as dominant and show up through the entire album, especially in the passionate, stand-out track “You Can’t Keep a Good Man Down”.

Dan’s
vocals are strong, clear and convincing while his lyrics touch on topics like farming and the countryside. Combining sounds from different backgrounds and eras gives this Vancouver quartet the advantage of appealing to many audiences. For the guys in Carpenter, hopefully the next effort will have more than just 10 tracks.
