Rev Theory - Light It Up

It’s always difficult for me to do radio rock, especially these guys. It’s due to the fact that there’s a tiny portion of raw grittiness and old-school rock ideas and sonic signatures floating around, but it’s all presented in a slightly less-than-modern, not at all cutting edge, and very pristine sounding package.

Sure, “Light It Up” is pretty and polished with absolutely spot-on vocal pitch and singing harmonies, as well as everything else produced to be “perfect”, but that’s the exact element that makes this mix of 90’s and early millennium radio rock that sucks out all the personality. It’s too bad they didn’t crank up the most entertaining parts, like the early Stone Temple Pilots vocals that dip in every now and then, or the grimy bar rock that feels like the origin of the band.

The few very catchy songs don’t really save the rest of this album from coming off as a standard blur in the background. Sure it fits nice, and is inoffensive as a PG–rated movie, but does anyone really pay attention?
