Dantesco - Pagano

Are you familiar with “opera metal”, which is essentially power metal often with operatic vocals and some symphonies added? Dantesco have their own take that many people wouldn’t expect, which takes heavy influences from Spanish flemenco guitar playing and operatic vocals sung in Spanish, which give the whole album an exotic flair.

It’s unfortunate that while you can feel the band trying hard, there are some important details causing them to lose the passion of the moment. The playing is on the loose side, and while they’re tight to oust most local bands, the style of metal they’ve chosen to play isn’t kind to organic playing. As a result, it feels like Dantesco has slowed down the whole album almost to a crawl to pull themselves closer together, as a result, losing tons of intensity. The vocalist also has points where he gets slightly out of key, especially when the vocals are going all on their own with nothing to anchor himself to. Production is also slightly lacking, making the guitars loose some power.

All those negatives aside, you can still feel that Dantesco is just waiting to burst with raw power, all they need to do is focus their energy in the right places. I hope that the pieces fall together for these guys, as all they really need to do is tighten up all the loose ends and get an album full of fast songs to offset all the slow tracks on this effort. That would make Dantesco a force to be reckoned with.
