From A Second Story Window - Conversations

It’s funny what bands evolve into. I saw From A Second Story Window live at the 2004 New England Metal And Hardcore Fest in ‘04, and I also have my hands on their first EP, “Not One Word Has Been Omitted”, and back then they were playing a violent, jagged mixture of metalcore, metal and even a little bit of post-hardcore with all bad-cop vocals. I was interested in their first album, “Delenda”, but I never got around to it, hearing mostly that it was a mixture of genres thrown together. Now we’re on to “Conversations”, and they’ve certainly cranked up the post-hardcore to the point where there’s a lot of clean sing, while still leaving a little bit of the metal and metalcore intact. Even with a couple of blast beats in the mix, the end result comes closer to something like say, From Autumn To Ashes. Don’t worry guys, it’s not an insult, as both bands mentioned hold over their hardcore and metal roots instead of coming out trying to sell records. Those roots certainly come out in the non-single note breakdowns. They’re not quite metal, but thank goodness they’re doing something different!

The strangest thing about this is the feeling that pours off. There’s a lot coming out, perhaps a mixture of different things, none of which I can really put my finger on. Certainly this digs in hard enough to come close to a summer album, in this case the release and near catchiness gets to a point where it’s a near summer album, the kind of thing that’ll always end up in my car until something even bigger comes along.
