Way Too Loud: What got you guys up and playing?
Andrew Carey: In 1999 we just wanted to start a hardcore band, and there was a big punk-rock scene in Jacksonville [Florida], and we wanted to do something different, and we were into heavier music for awhile, and it seemed like the natural thing to do! It was really silly at first, but we just kept on doing it, and here we are!
WTL: What have you guys been listening to lately?
Andrew: Lately in the van, it just depends on whoever drives. Josh listens to some 80’s and 90’s punk rock, and a lot of the new Minus The Bear goes around, a lot of Creedance Clearwater Revival, The Beatles, Turmoil. I don’t really drive, I just read and sleep in the van, so I don’t really pay attention to the music that’s going on.
WTL: What do you like reading?
Andrew: Right now I’m reading a book about the multi-cultural history of America from the immigrants point of view, it’s called “A Different Mirror”. It’s interesting, but it’s kind of hard to talk about, basically that white people suck! (Laughs) Like, “Look at what we did to the American Indians!” and capitalistic shit like that. It’s great, and weird. My mom said I should read it, so I did. Usually I read “Lord of the Rings” or shit like that, or books about atheism to try something new. I’m an atheist, so I might as well read up on it, so if someone asks me a question, I might be able to give them an answer.
WTL: Can you tell me what you’ve accomplished since Wolfbiker? I’ve noticed that you’ve done a lot of bigger tours since then.
Andrew: Bigger tours have just been the natural progression of things. We’re touring with As I Lay Dying, and they’re our buddies. We’ve gotten some pretty good tours over in Europe
WTL: You’ve been good friends with As I Lay Dying for awhile now, haven’t you?
Andrew: Yeah, after a really long time. We played a Chrsitian festival together about 9 years ago, which is kind of weird since I was just telling you about being an atheist… it was called “Cornerstone”. I think it was our first or second tour, and they were staying in the same college dorm that we were, and there was one room left that we ended up sharing, then we ended up playing shows with them. Then all of the sudden they blew up, and we thought that was awesome for them, and we got a tour offer in Europe to play with them, so we did that and got to know them a lot better which solidified our friendship. Ever since then, Tim helped us out with getting signed to Metal Blade, and obviously a great band to be on tour with.
WTL: Now that you’ve become full-time road warriors, what’s your standard routine?
Andrew: On this tour, it’s been a lot of overnight drives. Wake up, go to the show, wait to eat, smoke pot, then wait around some more, then wait for the beer, then wait to load in, wait to set up, wait to play, wait until the shows over to load out, then the next day, the same thing! It’s all waiting! Everything you do is wait!
WTL: So you do your best to combat that boredom?
Andrew: Yeah! Especially when your waiting on the beer! It’s like “Man, when’s the alcohol going to get here?” I would say that pot cures that, but once the high goes away, I’m just as bored as I was before, and I’m tired! But when I drink, I’m not as tired. I feel awake, and I go crazy! Like I’m going to go do something! Fueled by it? Maybe, but I wouldn’t say I’m an alcoholic, but it really helps out a lot!
WTL: What have you resorted to eating when your on the road?
Andrew: Peanut butter and jelly! Chips and salsa. Our bass player eats a lot of noodles that you can find at the gas station, chips. That’s basically my diet. It’s going to make me very malnourished, but whatever!
WTL: But you can still keep your great body!
Andrew: (Laughs) Actually, I think that’s what’s keeping me skinny, is the lack of food!
WTL: Do you get asked to play “Sunday Bloody Sunday” too often?
Andrew: Yea. It was the first song we ever covered, and we’ve played it for 9 years. I love the song, but I don’t want to play it anymore! We’ve got other covers, people could ask us to play those! I hate it when people ask to play covers anyway, but I guess we shouldn’t have done a cover record, but that’s just my own personal opinion. So we’re not going to play that tonight!
WTL: Can you tell me a little bit about the concept of “Wolfbiker”?
Andrew: I think we were just really pissed off, and wanted to write a really good pissed off record, and that’s what came out. But if you’re serious as far as the concept goes, well hey, I’m not funny at all! (Laughs) Sorry dude, I’m really tired. We had to cross the border last night. We were at the border at 5 in the morning, and we thought we were going to be raped by at the border again, because every time we go to the border, we have to wait there for 8 hours because they have to go through everything and check all our shit and count all our merch and make sure your not lying, and make sure we don’t have drugs. We got to the border this time, and they told us to just come on in. We were there for 10 minutes! We got to this guys house at 5 in the morning and didn’t really sleep at all. There was a little too much partying. We’re trying to catch up because hits is the last leg of the tour, sp we’re getting droopy eyes, but we keep saying “I can make it! I can make it!”
WTL: Now the single note breakdown…
Andrew: I’m just going to play dumb about that one! (Laughs)
WTL: Who would you like to tour with who’s both feasible, but not obvious?
Andrew: Dude, I would love to tour with Thrice. We’ve never done anything with them before, and I’m not sure if that is really feasible, but maybe some time. Or Pearl Jam! That would be great! Grunge is coming back, so we’ll see how that works!
WTL: What good lies have you told people about your band name?
Andrew: Well, Evergreen Terrace is the retirement home where all our grandparents, who are World War II veterans go. That’s where we got the idea to start a band, so that’s why we’re called Evergreen Terrace!
