At The Pulse Of Kapitulation - Live In East Berlin 1990 (DVD)

Finally, my childhood association with old-school thrash has finally come full-circle. I had heard so many times about the “big three” German thrash bands, Sodom, Destruction and now Kreator, yet before this website existed, I hadn’t had the chance to hear any of them.

This DVD isn’t just a live show from back in 1990, there’s a portion that’s actually a short documentary about the metal residents of East Germany attempts to get an exposure of any metal at all on their side of the Berlin Wall. Even with the difficulty of obtaining certain things in East Germany, heavy metal was apparently also a rare and valuable commodity. Kreator choosing to play in East Berlin in 1990 was of course an important event to those hungry for metal.

The live show is Kreator headlining a large venue in front of 7000 people. The DVD gives the impression that after 30 seconds of darkness and a little bit of an introduction, the band jumps right into the action, no samples, no orchestrated introductions, just into the action after half a minute. After being to so may live shows, I can’t how many times I wished the bands would just cut to the chase without messing around. Kreator owned that stage just as if they’d been kids in the underground (and still dressed as such) who had grown into bigger venues, which happens to be the actual case. They move, they scream, the guitarists almost duel against each other as they trade off leading passages, then sharing harmonies. The only real drawback is that the guitars are sometimes out of tune.

Also contained on the DVD is horror movie based around videos Kreator has done (I believe anyway, they may have been made for the horror movie). The videos to the actual songs have fairly decent production, typically showcasing the band playing (simple, but effective). The scenes between the songs however don’t convey much of a story, beyond a bald man with glasses who starts drawing a symbol before running to hack people up.

Also included was a CD containing the audio of the live show in East Berlin. While some labels would release an audio version of a DVD separately, it’s nice little bonus to have this classic and historic event playable both on your TV and DVD. If you’ve got any inkling towards thrash (especially you new kids hopping onto the whole retro bandwagon), this is a great way to learn a little about the roots of heavy metal, as well as a very important event to the Germans.
