Saving Grace – Behind Enemy Lines

Some people have a “thing” against religious bands. I’ve basically read nothing about Saving Grace, so apart from their name and the label they’re on, I have no idea how far their religious conviction goes, nor did I get a lyrics sheet. I probably could listen really carefully to the words the singer spits out, as I can understand some of the harsh vocals that some of the “you can’t understand what they’re saying” crowd holds as their mantra.

Now as far as deathcore actually goes, it’s become a standard formula with actual -core parts often being only the breakdowns and a few gang shouts hanging around. Between the fairly standard single-note breakdowns though, you can hear plenty of old-school floating around. Old Machine Head, old Sepultura, Morbid Angel, At The Gates, old All That Remains going back to “Behind The Silence And Solitude” and a little bit of “This Darkened Heart”, all mixed in with old-school hardcore chords running up and down the neck, and some post-hardcore arpeggios. The songs can be sort of a mixed bag with blast beats, gang shouts and pig squels one minute, then going to a relaxed melodic metalcore jaunt that could’ve been a long lost All That Remains ditty.

There’s entertaining points, especially when Saving Grace hits just the right riff to take back to early 90’s Machine Head and Sepultura, or back to early millennium metalcore. Had “Behind Enemy Lines” come around 2004, I’m sure it would’ve sounded pretty fresh, but the most notable influences are hidden under the surface of a fairly standard metalcore wrapper. Nice try though.
