Pyramids - Pyramids

I’ve had fairly odd ambient releases come my way, but this one takes the cake for being the most strange. Mostly it’s due to the spacey echoing effects, the drum machine which almost exclusively does blast beats (but only if it’s going) and the long, clean vocals hidden amongst the chaos. I say chaos as there’s so many strange space effects going on at once. As the album progresses, you get more blast beats, and then the black metal like guitars start coming in.
I’m not against the concept of what Pyramids is trying to achieve, but since the echoing effects are out-of-time with the other instruments (namely the drum machine), the end effect has in-time instruments grating against those out-of-time space effects. As the effort progresses, there’s some rougher vocals hidden far beneath the surface, and some of the space chaos is reigned in a little bit, and a hinting of industrial is thrown in as well, also very subtle. Unfortunately, pulling the action together at almost the last song doesn’t help you from feeling that someone overdid it when they got lost making the trance like effects.
The only one complaint is of course a huge one, and that’s keeping the echoing effects in time. Somehow I think if Pyramids are thinking of continuing the same concept they’ve got going on another album, they’ll be able to perfect the idea. Even great record labels like Hydra Head can’t win em’ all.
