Dark Suns – Grave Human Genuine

Progressive is becoming a big thing these days, isn’t it? We’ve got progressive metal, and progressive post-hardcore. Look! Another connection between metal and post-hardcore! That should piss a lot of people off! Dark Suns isn’t related to anything post-hardcore per se, but the vocalist does have a light floaty voice that would appeal to those who love Coheed And Cambria, as well as 3.
The entertaining part of “Grave Human Genuine” is actually the fact that Dark Suns aren’t thinking about how many guitar runs they can stuff into a song. Instead, with the exception of a few off-time bits and pieces, “Grave Human Genuine”, is actually progressive based heavily on simplicity, with long, flowing, ballad or near-ballad songs. Does it sound like musical passion? At times it the passion does pour off, but like many progressive bands, the attempts to tech themselves up with those off-time pieces are a bit forced, and attempts to prog the action up with “experimental” phases to more standard realms of music are generic and not quite as inspired as the more free-flow of the rest of the album. It’s still a great break from the norm.
