Heaven Shall Burn – Iconoclast

I remember the last Heaven Shall Burn album, “Deaf To Our Prayers”, quite well. The most prominent feature was the heavy influence of old-school European death metal, a rarity in the world of metalcore. It’s still an element that permeates every song on “Iconoclast”, much like the Swedish melodic death metal harmonies, although even those are pulled from unexpected places, such as Edge Of Sanity, or even past Sweden, like a little bit of “Heartwork” era Carcass. One such Carcass example would be the harmony in “A Thousand Suns” sounding incredibly similar to “This Mortal Coil”. Other melodic moments have a bit more of an epic feel from the dueling guitars, with the underpinning riffs of the rhythm guitar and melodies on top. Thrash metal is also on display as well, with quite a few sharp triplet pedal tones, as well as a few beefy riffs.

Everything is supported by an almost nearly constant stream of double-bass beatings from the drums, and the vocals often sound like ten people yelling at you at once, yet something is missing. Ah yes, that would be single-note breakdowns, and with those gone, that places Heaven Shall Burn in the world of what I call post-metalcore, having exactly the elements to push forward into the next generation while leaving the copycats and also-rans behind
