Twilight – S/T

You may have heard of this underground “supergroup” all the way back in 2005, or maybe even a slight bit later when Aaron Turner of Isis joined. The group has within it’s ranks a who’s who of underground, raw black metal, such as Hildolf of Draugar as well as Imperial, most notorious for playing in Krieg, although he’s done time in a lot of other black metal bands (too many to name). There’s the famed Azentrius (aka Blake Judd) of Nachtmystium, and on this album are 2 famed anti-social isolationist US black metal men, Wrest of Leviathan, and Malefic of Xasthur, the last one is no longer with the band, but did play on this release. I’m sure after many arguments, the members finally sat down to play musical chairs, with many doing duty playing an instrument on a song, then switching to another for the next.
The 3 bands I’m most familiar with are Leviathan, Xasthur and Nachmystium. Those bands have built up quite a reputation with some fairly catchy licks, and certainly everyone is able to come together and pull through on Twilight, though not quite to the extent the member have on their own bands. The end result comes off a bit more like a compilation due to the differences in guitar tones, playing styles and vocals. It almost as if the production is different on each song as well, although I’m guessing it’s due mostly to the differences in guitars and vocals between songs.
It’s the lack of cohesion between the songs that tends to force the album apart, which is most likely exactly what you’d get if members were switching instruments on every song. The album does however earn some of it’s merit back by sheer novelty, and the fact that you’ll never hear these songs anywhere else, as it’s not truly just a simple compilation album.
