Sword Toward Self - Dissolution Mantras (Demo/EP)

The scene with heavy music in Australia seems to be heavily divided with people attempting to follow certain North American trends as close as possible, and a few other bands pushing forward with some truly great ideas. It just makes me wonder what’s going on to prevent bands pushing the envelope from getting signed, as there seems to be enough people down under that they could practically support themselves.

Sword Toward Self
present a rather seamless mix of progressive death metal, Florida style death metal, melodic death metal, black metal, and even a hinting of Opeth with the 8-minute opener, which is named after the band themselves which features an acoustic break, singing and all. The progressive portions fortunately don’t sound like skill showcases, so the few runs and guitar solos aren’t needless noodling. There’s also a few nice dashings of simple brutality to offset some of the melody and guitar solos.

This isn’t the first band I’ve heard from down under who’s putting some effort into creativity, yet hasn’t gotten signed. Perhaps it’s time for those over in Australia with the DIY mentality to go to the next step and create their own record label.
