Scale The Summit – Monument

The world of heavy music is certainly a different place now, as it’s gained the addition of instrumental bands. My guess is that’s it’s due to the connection that Pelican has with Isis and Neurosis, as well as the current uprising of progressive.

Scale The Summit is progressive for sure, but they do exactly what there is to be loved about the genre. Sure, there’s guitar runs all over the place, but they aren’t that fast, and instead have an enjoyable jammed out feel, rather than a vehicle for the band to show off. The overall feel actually has more of a post-hardcore and indie rock flair with a bit of technical prowess replacing simple chords. That’s only a technical description of how “Monument” sounds, what’s harder for a band is to get the true emotion out, and in this case it sounds like the members can’t wait get to their jam space or play live. I’m guessing that these guys probably smile or show how much of a fun time they’re having in every promo pic as well.

I haven’t heard progressive this fun for a long time. For whatever reason, their signing to my favourite record label after this release (Prosthetic Records) slipped under my radar. It’s an unexpected match that’s sure to work out well for both parties.
