Concert - Raised Fist

A special thanks goes out to Keith from Epitaph (both a great label and a great promo guy!) I had lots of fun hanging out with the guys from Raised Fist before the show started. Singer Alexander was quite well-read and had many stories to tell, and drummer Matte Modin had many crazy stories from his days in playing with Dark Funeral.
In November at the Salt Lounge in London, Ontario descended the Swedish band Raised Fist from their tour van. That’s right, a van, not a bus! More on that later… Not knowing much about the band except the rare story from the internet, these mysterious fellows who have captured the interest of many around the world were on another Canadian tour, though different from the rest. As strange as it seems, in their 15 year career, they’ve never played in the United States, but we Canadians are fortunate to have them grace us with their presence every once in awhile.
They took to the stage and beat the living daylights out of their instruments while vocalist Alexander spit out his lyrics in rapid-fire fashion, much like a spitting cobra tossing it’s venom. I would describe the music itself as definitely being related to hardcore, but very heavy in a metallic sense. The older songs were short, raw and primitive blunt beatings, while the newer songs had a sense of melody that brought a signature Swedish sound forth.
With new drummer Matte Modin on board, some of the songs had the fastest tempos I’ve ever heard in something related to hardcore. The other 2 guitarists and bass player swung their instruments around, practically pulverising their strings. During the songs themselves, if lyrics weren’t present, you could expect a few long-stretching jump-kicks nearly hitting the ceiling from Alexander.
Like many of their songs, the live set from Raised Fist was a short bursts of fury. They may have played 13 songs in 45 minutes, but the energy and ferocity that they were delivered at was much like getting a punch in the face.
