Exodus - Gary Holt

Guitarist and founding member Gary Holt was kind enough to reply to me via e-mail about some questions I had about Exodus. I intentionally kept the number of questions short, as many other interviews will inevitably cover the same ground, and I was trying to hit at some other issues. This also marks the first time I’ve interviewed a band from the 80’s, which is a great thing for me because I grew up on 80’s thrash! Finally, check out “The Atrocity Exhibit: Exhibit A”. It got quite a good score here, and will end up on the year end list here.
Way Too Loud: It’s great to hear from an old-school band going as far back as the 80’s! I haven’t interviewed a band from that far back yet!
Gary Holt: You make me feel old! But I still feel young.
WTL: I reviewed your latest album and loved it! It’ll end up on the year end list! What happened to Exodus to make “The Atrocity Exhibition: Exhibit A”? It sounded like an album made by a bunch of young bucks full of energy with something to prove.
Gary: We always feel we have something to prove. We’ve been doubted so many times, but we carry a chip on our shoulders, and we aim to show everyone we mean business.
WTL: How did you end up with longer songs with things like big intros, and big breaks and such? Was that just a natural outcome of the writing process?
Gary: Totally natural, we never planned any of it. When we started writing the songs, the only rule was we had no rules.
WTL: Have there been some people having trouble understanding what your trying to accomplish with “The Atrocity Exhibition: Exhibit A”? I’ve read a few things that would suggest that some fans don’t want you to move forward and create modern sounding albums.
Gary: Except for a few people who think we should still sound like we did in 1985, every seems to think this is one of our greatest achievements, and the reviews have been amazing.
WTL: How do you feel about the way the interest in metal has spiked? It seems like every form of metal has gained some popularity.
Gary: It always comes in waves, some new trend comes along, then dies, while metal survives. But this is a good time for metal I believe.
WTL: How do you feel about other music fans gaining a new interest in metal? I’ve heard that Hatebreed fans are very receptive.
Gary: Yeah, the tour we did together was awesome, and their fans were getting into the show every night. You might get one or two people who would give us the “hair stare” from time to time, but it was overwhelmingly killer every night.
WTL: How about the uprising of new bands playing 80’s thrash like Municipal Waste?
Gary: I think it’s great, and there are a lot of other bands that are coming up that are killer too.
WTL: Thanks for answering these questions, I grew up on 80’s thrash, so I hope this encourages kids to seek out their metal roots!
Gary: I hope so too!
