Concert - The Locust, Despised Icon, Child Abuse, The Discord Of A Forgotten Sketch

A special thanks goes out to Keith from Epitaph for both asking me to come to this show and getting me on. Keith’s a cool guy, and Epitaph is a great label, so make sure you check that label out!

This was my second time at Toronto’s Reverb on November 14th. The first band to come up was Montreal’s The Discord Of A Forgotten Sketch. Four slim dudes with orange shirts and white pants ascended to the stage to scream out jazz/grind complete with 60’s style interludes and all. Unfortunately for the style, the band seemed fairly standard amongst the many Dillinger Escape Plan Clones. Perhaps time will tell on future releases if this band will grow.

Up next was the strange nearly instrumental trio of Child Abuse. They seem to have traded in a guitar player for a keyboardist who would sometimes use the mike to create strange vocalizations, which seemed to be lacking words. The bass was distorted and super-heavy, and often laden with strange, spacey effects. The audience wasn’t into them at first, but with each passing song, the reaction grew stronger every time. As a side note, I spoke to the bass player about some famous death metal tours, such as his attendance to the Agnostic Front, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Malevolent Creation tour which took place in the early 90’s.

I’ve been hooked on Despised Icon since I saw them live in 2005, when they put on a crazy live show in a tiny venue before a few people. That was before they had ever toured the state. This time around Alex Pelletier leaned heavily into the audience relying on the people around him to hold him up. As thin as he is, he must be pretty strong, because the dude is heavy! I believe this was the 5th time I’ve seen them live. I also had a good conversation with new guitarist Al Glassman about some tiny micro-brew bars, and I also talked to Steve Marios about Suffocation and the old-school episodes of Mad TV (those ones were the best!). Steve said he owns the “Human Waste” EP on tape!

The Locust is a band I’ve only been recently familiar with this year. I was completely hooked when I heard some songs in passing, and my interested in them has been growing ever since. Now was the time I got to witness the famous bug suits in person. The drummer was placed up front in a wide lineup of all 4 band members, and he was nuts on his kit. The other band members played their spazzy, grindy, whatever it is they play staying in their places while at the same time keeping as active as possible in their spots. The only real fault I could find was the long waits between songs. I had spoken earlier to Bobby about the suits helping to defy classification between crowds, and the effect seemed to work well, as I saw many music fans, from hardcore, to several different kinds of underground, to old-school punks, to metal fans adorned with raw black metal and death metal shirts, to obvious college kids who weren’t sporting band shirts. It was especially cool to see different crowds getting together.
