Exodus – The Atrocity Exhibition… Exhibit A

Damn these guys have been busy! With some downtime between full-length albums between 1997 and 2004, Exodus have now released three albums in a four year period between 2004 and 2007, with another album planned for next year. I guess they’ll have a lot of new stuff in their live set.
The opening intro went from a short yet epic instrumental introduction which is practically part of the first song, which busts into high-energy thrash attack, and the rest of the album conitues the climax from there. It sounds just like a) they were back in the 80’s trying their hardest to best their last album, or b) like a band who had reformed after spending years apart with a renewed fire sparking an explosion. Considering that neither of those events happened, I’m just wondering what the hell happened in the lives Exodus to make an album of this caliber. Did they just quit all their day jobs (if they had any) all at once?
How does “The Atrocity Exhibition… Exhibit A” sound? It sounds like Exodus has been pushing forward all these years without losing what they are. It’s heavier with biting guitars and modernized 80’s thrash riffs, faster tempos and vocals roughed up harder than ever. The songs tend to be on the longer side brimming nasties and taking breaks for harmonies, big intros, lots of diverse solo switching, and advanced song structures, yet the songs never feel long due to the ferocity at which their delivered.
This year was thought to be turning out slow and poor, but with “The Atrocity Exhibition… Exhibit A”, and follow-up album coming (is it already recorded?) the tail end releases of 2007 are really starting to make up for the slow start.
